Box Turtle Design has organized many community based art events in NYC and Seattle. Large-scale chalk murals created by children and artists have been created to benefit various charitable organizations. Public art events can also be used to promote corporate activities. Video and photographic images of these events are visually powerful, and make great images for advertising, public relations (media coverage) and promotional materials.

Eric Shalit created Streetdrawing, a public arts organization dedicated to creating large-scale chalk-drawn murals with children in NYC parks. Working alongside professional artists, children were encouraged to express themselves. An exhibit of photographs documenting the project appeared at the Brooklyn Museum.

This 30x60 ft. mural was created in one day by Portland middle school students as the centerpiece image for a poster promoting ArtQuake (Portland's Bumbershoot). The resulting artwork was photographed from a cherrypicker at a height of 40 ft.

Featured above is an image from an event filmed for use in a television PSA (public service announcement) for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). CASA is a child advocacy organization.

Many of the documentary images are very beautiful and compelling. They have great potential for use in promoting both non-profit and for-profit causes.

The image above shows a technique we call "people-drawing" which begins by kids tracing each other's outlines.
